Chapter 1 - The Lie

Madeline woke to the sound of her husband lying.
She had been conscious for less than an hour. Her mouth tasted like metal, her arms felt filled with wet sand, and every time she lifted her head the hospital room rolled sideways.
Detective Elena Ruiz stood near the window with a notebook in one hand.
"Who was inside the house this afternoon?" she asked.
Preston sat beside Madeline's bed, still wearing the navy jacket he'd had on when the ambulance arrived.
"Just me and Poppy."
Madeline turned her face toward him.
He didn't look back.
Across the room, four-year-old Poppy hugged her stuffed rabbit so tightly its ears bent beneath her chin. She had barely spoken since the paramedics found Madeline unconscious on the kitchen floor.
But now Poppy's eyes moved from her father's face to the inside pocket of his jacket.
Madeline noticed.
So did Preston.
His hand covered the pocket almost casually.
That tiny movement scared her more than the lie.
Because Serena Blake had absolutely been in the house.
Madeline remembered her best friend standing at the kitchen island, stirring honey into warm milk.
"You look awful," Serena had said. "Drink this before you fall over."
Madeline remembered taking three sips.
Then her knees had gone soft.
She remembered Poppy crying.
Footsteps upstairs.
Preston's arms beneath her shoulders.
Serena near the doorway, pale and shaking.
Then nothing.
Ruiz closed her notebook. "We'll talk again tomorrow."
Before she reached the door, Poppy slid off her chair.
She walked to Madeline's bed, looked at Preston, and whispered, "Daddy took the little bottle."
Preston went completely still.
Madeline's eyes dropped to his jacket.
"What bottle?" Ruiz asked.
Poppy pointed.
Preston stood too fast. "She's four. She's confused."
Poppy's lower lip trembled.
"No," she said. "The bottle Serena put in Mommy's milk. Daddy took it."
For the first time since waking, Madeline stopped wondering whether Serena had tried to poison her.

A worse question took its place.
Why had her husband hidden the proof?
