Chapter 18 - Chosen

"Evelyn chose you," Serena said.
Madeline felt a chill climb her arms.
"For what?"
"For Preston."
Years earlier, before Madeline and Preston met at a charity dinner, Evelyn had researched Halcyon Medical, Madeline's trust, her father's failing health, even her dating history.
The meeting hadn't been chance.
It had been arranged.
"Preston was supposed to marry into control," Serena said. "At first he liked you. Maybe he even loved you. But Evelyn never forgot the reason."
Madeline sat down slowly.
Seven years of marriage rearranged themselves in her mind.
The restaurant where they'd "accidentally" met twice.
The investor who introduced them.
Evelyn's immediate warmth.
Preston's sudden interest in Halcyon's voting structure after the wedding.
"Why do you know this?"
Serena looked ashamed. "Because I found Evelyn's background file on you. And because Preston told me when he was drunk. He said his mother had picked the perfect wife."
Madeline wanted to scream.
Instead she asked, "Where's the file?"
"Safe deposit box. Ruiz has the key now."
The file contained photographs, private financial summaries, old medical records, and notes on Madeline's vulnerabilities.
One line had been underlined twice.
Strong attachment to future children. Fear of family abandonment.
They had mapped her heart before Preston ever touched it.
Ruiz used the evidence to obtain new charges against Evelyn and expand the conspiracy case.
Dr. Mercer was arrested that evening at a private airfield.
Martin Keene agreed to cooperate before midnight.
Piece by piece, the machine began to collapse.
But one piece was missing.
Preston.
He was supposed to be under guard at the prison hospital after surgery.
At 1:12 a.m., Ruiz called Madeline.
"A transport officer was attacked. Preston escaped during a medical transfer."
Madeline sat up in bed.
Poppy was sleeping beside her.

Then the home alarm chimed.
One downstairs door had just opened.
