Chapter 14 - The Other Wives

The first woman was named Claire Danner.

The second was Beth Monroe.

The third was Lindsay Hart.

All three had once been connected to men who worked with Preston's father.

All three had been declared mentally incompetent before large financial transactions.

Two were dead.

One had vanished.

Madeline stared at the photographs inside the evidence room while Ruiz explained what they knew.

"This didn't start with Preston," she said. "His father used the same private doctor and the same legal consultant. Evelyn handled payments through shell companies."

"They did this to other women."

"Looks that way."

Madeline felt something colder than fear.

Rage.

Now she understood the pattern.

Drug her. Make her doubt herself. Document the doubt. Take control.

If she fights, call her unstable. If she stops fighting, take everything.

Serena survived surgery and agreed to cooperate fully.

Preston survived too.

By evening, both he and Evelyn were under arrest.

Madeline thought the nightmare was finally slowing down.

Then Ruiz called her into the hallway.

"We have a problem."

One of Preston's lawyers had produced a signed document transferring Madeline's voting rights in Halcyon Medical to Preston six weeks earlier.

Madeline stared at the signature.

It looked exactly like hers.

"I never signed this."

"A notary says you did."

"She's lying."

Ruiz's expression was grim. "Maybe. But tomorrow morning Halcyon's board is scheduled to vote on the sale Preston wanted. If this document holds, his proxy can vote your shares even while he's in custody."

Madeline felt the room close around her.

Preston might go to prison.

May you like

Evelyn might go with him.

But they could still take her father's company before breakfast.
