Chapter 15 - The Third Tape

The tape survived.

Barely.

A forensic technician cleaned it and transferred the audio the next morning.

Everyone gathered in a small interview room at the sheriff’s office.

Evelyn sat between Emma and Samuel.

The recording began with silence.

Then Richard’s younger voice.

“You want your daughter back? Sign.”

Evelyn answered, “You can’t keep her from me.”

“I can do whatever I want. Your family doesn’t even know where you are.”

“They’re looking for me.”

Richard laughed.

“Then let them look.”

Paper rustled.

Evelyn said, “You ran me off the road.”

A pause.

Then Richard replied, “And next time I won’t stop to pull the kid out.”

Emma gripped David’s hand until her knuckles whitened.

On the tape, Evelyn began crying.

Richard continued.

“Sign the trust papers. Sign the medical papers. Then maybe I let you see Emma.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ruiz finally said, “That’s enough to change this case.”

“Into what?” Emma asked.

“Attempted murder. Fraud. Kidnapping-related offenses, depending on what prosecutors can establish. And yesterday’s fire may add arson.”

Samuel leaned back, eyes closed.

For thirty years he had imagined what he would say if he ever found the man who hurt his sister.

Now he wanted only one thing.

A courtroom.

Ruiz’s phone buzzed.

She read the message and stood.

“What?” David asked.

“We found Richard’s pickup.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“Pine Hollow Lake.”

Samuel stood too.

Ruiz held up a hand. “You’re not coming.”

Then another deputy entered.

His face was pale.

“Carla, you need to see this.”

He turned his phone toward them.

A live security camera showed Samuel’s cabin.

Richard stood on the dock holding a red plastic gasoline can.

And tied to the dock post beside him was the little blue rowboat.
