Chapter 19 - What Richard Was Really Afraid Of

At first, the beneficiary form made no sense.
Why would Richard put money in Leo’s name?
Then the financial investigator explained.
“It wasn’t a gift. It was a setup.”
Richard had forged documents making himself trustee over Leo’s inheritance if Emma died before the child turned eighteen.
The life insurance policy on Emma fit the same pattern.
David went pale.
“He planned to control everything through Leo.”
Emma felt sick.
Ruiz nodded. “We can’t prove what he intended beyond the crimes already charged, but the pattern matters.”
Richard accepted no responsibility at first.
He called the tapes fake. He called Evelyn confused. He called Samuel greedy. He claimed Leo’s boat incident was a “terrible misunderstanding.”
The marina video destroyed that lie.
So did the fire evidence.
So did the fingerprints on the hidden box.
Six months later, Richard stood in court wearing a gray suit that hung loosely from his shoulders.
Emma sat between David and Evelyn. Samuel sat behind them holding the two matching necklaces in his palm.
When Richard was given a chance to speak, he turned toward Emma.
“I raised you.”
Emma did not answer.
“I fed you. I sent you to school. I was there.”
Finally she stood.
“You were there because you made sure she couldn’t be.”
Richard flinched.
“You don’t get credit for standing in the space you created by destroying someone else.”
The courtroom went silent.
Richard looked away first.
Under a plea agreement covering the modern offenses and resolving several older charges supported by newly uncovered evidence, he received a lengthy prison sentence. Civil judgments stripped him of the stolen trust assets and returned what could be recovered to Evelyn.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Emma ignored them.
Leo, now two, ran toward Evelyn on unsteady legs.
“Evie!”
Evelyn dropped to her knees and caught him.
Samuel laughed.
Then Leo reached for the pendant at Samuel’s neck.
Samuel looked at Evelyn.
“I think this belongs back in the family.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“No.”
She closed Samuel’s fingers around it.
“Keep yours.”
May you like
Then she touched Leo’s necklace.
“He already brought us home.”
