Chapter 6 - The Box Evelyn Left Behind

Deputies searched the roads that night. Richard’s rental SUV was found abandoned at a gas station twenty miles north.

Richard was gone.

Emma refused to leave Leo’s hospital room until the doctor cleared him shortly after midnight. The boy was exhausted but safe, curled against David’s chest with one fist closed around his father’s shirt.

Samuel waited in the hallway.

When Emma came out, she held Leo’s necklace.

“Tell me everything,” she said.

So he did.

He told her about Evelyn sneaking out to concerts, burning pancakes every Sunday, and calling storms “free fireworks.” He told her about their father, stern and proud, and the fight that split the family when Evelyn refused to leave Richard.

“I should’ve gone after her,” Samuel said.

Emma looked at him. “You were her brother, not her jailer.”

“That distinction gets harder to live with after thirty years.”

Samuel drove them to his cabin because the police wanted the Parkers somewhere private.

Inside, he opened an old cedar chest.

Letters filled half of it.

Every one addressed to Evelyn.

Every one returned unopened.

Emma touched the stack. “You kept these?”

“All of them.”

At the bottom lay a small wooden box.

Samuel stared at it.

“What?” David asked.

“My mother gave me this after she died. Said it belonged to Evelyn.”

He had never opened it. Grief had made some objects feel sacred and dangerous at the same time.

Now he broke the brittle tape.

Inside was a motel key, a photograph of Evelyn holding a newborn baby, and a folded note.

Emma grabbed the photograph.

The newborn wore a hospital bracelet.

EMMA LANE.

Her knees buckled.

David caught her.

Samuel unfolded the note.

The handwriting was Evelyn’s.

Sammy—if anything happens to me, Richard will say I ran. Don’t believe him. Find the locker at Union Station. The key is here. Please, please find my baby.

Below that was a date.

March 1993.

May you like

Emma looked up, stunned.

“My mother wrote this the week I was born.”
