Chapter 4 - The Name on the Wire

Rachel Whitcomb found her brother in the hotel office twenty minutes after he stopped the ceremony. Still in her bridesmaid dress, she shut the door and asked the question everyone else had avoided.
"Did she really say it?"
"Every word."
Rachel sat down. She had run Harbor Light Homes for a decade and knew every family, every leaking ceiling, every child who needed a safe place to sleep.
"The money they're moving isn't yours," she said. "It's restricted donations for the Willow Court rehabilitation. Those roofs are leaking. People have waited three winters."
Owen connected his laptop to the office screen. "The wire shows two approvals. Rachel's credentials and Graham's. The bank says it can hold release until four if we file a dispute with supporting information."
"I was at the rehearsal dinner," Rachel said.
"Someone used your access," Owen replied. "Have you misplaced your laptop or phone?"
Rachel rubbed her eyes. "Sloane borrowed my phone during dinner. Said the seating chart link wouldn't load on hers. I gave it back after dessert."
Nate's stomach tightened. "She stood next to you for photographs."
"And kept saying how lucky she was to marry into a family that trusted her."
They called the bank, requested an emergency hold, and reported suspected unauthorized activity. Owen was careful: a claim was not proof, and Graham had access to legitimate company accounts. They needed records, not accusations.
Rachel opened the attached invoice. Marsh Point Services was requesting payment for building repairs that had not begun.
"Look at the address," she said. "There's no warehouse there. It's a vacant parking lot."
Reporters began calling. Sloane's mother, Patricia Avery, left a voicemail accusing Nate of destroying the wedding.
Owen silenced the notifications. "I'll handle the press."
A security supervisor knocked. He had footage from the private elevator at 11:46 the previous night. On the small screen, Sloane entered carrying Rachel's phone. Graham Pike was waiting inside.

The doors closed around them.
When they opened, Sloane was holding a thick blue folder marked HARBOR LIGHT - BOARD AUTHORIZATION.
