Chapter 13 - The Missing Forty-Three

The name was Rowan Community Trust. Not a secret individual, not another lost relative, but the one institution Walter had wanted to protect.
Silas described the first theft. Gideon diverted small payments from the trust while telling Alisa they had been invested for the tenants. When Walter noticed, Gideon moved the accounts and hired Silas to destroy the paper records. The fire killed Walter, and the money kept moving.
"Forty-three households," Silas said. "The same families getting eviction notices today."
Tessa stared at him. "My mother lived at Rowan House. She raised me there. You're saying those families were paying for his fortune?"
"Part of it," Silas answered.
"And you helped."
"Yes."
The word landed harder than any excuse.
Iris Lane was already preparing an emergency court filing. She laid out the forged electronic signatures, Walter's letter, the financial records, and the immediate threat of eviction.
"A judge can pause a transfer while the facts are examined," she told Alisa. "That doesn't mean all the money comes back tomorrow. This will take work."
"Then we start tomorrow," Alisa replied. "And today."
When the hearing began by video, Gideon's lawyer argued that Adrian had signed electronically and that Alisa had authorized the restructuring years ago. The judge demanded to see the underlying records, not summaries assembled by the company selling the property.
Adrian watched his father from across the table. Gideon wouldn't meet his eyes.
Willa was safe with Helen, but the child had asked one question before leaving: "If flowers can hide a person, can houses hide lies?"
Adrian had told her, "Sometimes. That's why grownups have to listen when you say something isn't right."
The judge granted a temporary pause on the Rowan House transfer pending review and ordered the transaction records preserved. Residents could stay while the dispute was investigated.
Alisa closed her eyes with relief.

Then Iris's phone rang. It was the trust's independent accountant.
"The documents were preserved," he said, "but the account holding the loan advance has already been emptied."
