Chapter 18 - The Signature She Remembered

"I signed that paper," Alisa told Iris. "A month after our wedding."
Adrian felt the ground shift again. "Mom?"
"Gideon said it would let him pay bills while I finished nursing school. I was twenty-four. My father warned me not to mix marriage with the trust. I thought he was trying to control me."
Her face tightened with regret. "I didn't understand that one signature could become thirty-seven years of lies."
Iris examined the copy. "A valid signature doesn't authorize every transaction made later. We need the complete document, the terms, and proof of what you understood when you signed."
Tessa brought Alisa a chair and sat beside her. "My mom made mistakes, too. She stayed quiet when she thought nobody would believe her. She spent years regretting it."
"I don't want to spend the rest of my life regretting," Alisa said.
"Then don't. Help us prove what happened."
Over the next two days, the financial investigation widened. The bank froze several remaining accounts. A judge extended the order protecting Rowan House while the disputed signatures and trust transfers were reviewed. Tenants met with a housing lawyer who promised plain-language updates instead of frightening rumors.
Grant Pike, facing charges for his role in Tessa's kidnapping, provided the investigators with the name of the person who had sent him instructions. The communications were traced to an account controlled by Gideon. Other evidence, including the tape and the mill records, was being examined independently.

Gideon was charged in connection with the wedding abduction and the suspected financial fraud. Silas faced charges for Tessa's confinement and related offenses. The old fire investigation remained open. No one pretended a court could sort out thirty-one years of wrongdoing in a weekend.
That evening Adrian went to the chapel to collect Tessa's things. The giant rose wall had been dismantled. Workers had found a spare veil beneath the altar carpet, with a note pinned inside in his father's handwriting: KEEP THE VEIL DOWN UNTIL VOWS.
