Chapter 13 - The Hangar

The police told us not to go to Midway.
Luca ignored them.
So did I.
“You’re staying in the car,” he told me.
“Try stopping me.”
“Nia—”
“My children were targeted because of this. I’m done waiting in safe rooms while men decide what I’m allowed to know.”
He stared at me for a second.
Then nodded. “Stay behind security.”
That was the closest Luca Moretti had ever come to learning.
The hangar doors were closing when police vehicles arrived.
Victor stood on the tarmac in a navy coat, remarkably calm.
Dr. Hargrove looked terrified.
Aaron Pike ran.
Officers chased him between parked aircraft.
Victor didn’t move.
He looked directly at Luca and smiled.
“You always were emotional where she was concerned.”
Luca lunged forward, but I caught his arm.
“Don’t give him what he wants.”
Victor’s eyes shifted to me.
“Nia. Still cleaning up Luca’s impulses.”
“You paid a doctor to falsify my medical records.”
“I corrected a strategic problem.”
Dr. Hargrove flinched.
My body went cold.
“You destroyed my marriage.”
“No. I showed you how fragile it was.”
Luca’s face twisted.
Victor continued, almost bored. “If he had trusted you, none of my work would have mattered.”
That was the worst part.
He was right about one thing.
Then Hargrove shouted, “He threatened my family!”
Everyone turned.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Hargrove pointed at him. “He made me alter the labs. He made me tell her she was infertile. I have copies. I kept everything.”
Victor moved fast.
His hand went inside his coat.
Security tackled him before he could pull out the gun.
The tarmac erupted in shouting.
As officers pinned Victor down, Hargrove grabbed my sleeve.
“There’s something you don’t know,” he whispered.
I recoiled. “Don’t touch me.”
“Your pregnancy was not an accident after treatment.”
I froze.
“What are you talking about?”
He looked toward Luca.
“One of your embryos survived.”
May you like
My heart stopped.
“And Victor knew before you did.”
