Chapter 20 - What We Built After

“No,” I told the cameras.

The reporters erupted.

I kept going. “We are becoming a family in a different way. Our children deserve two parents who tell the truth. That is what we are building.”

It was not the romantic answer people wanted.

It was the honest one.

Over the next year, Luca kept every promise that mattered. He came to school plays without bringing cameras. He learned Mila hated tags in her shirts and Micah needed exactly two bedtime stories. He even stopped trying to solve every scraped knee with a private doctor.

Evelyn divorced him quietly and became my friend. She testified against her father and built a new life far away from the political machine that had controlled hers.

Luca resigned as CEO but remained chairman. Moretti Global survived.

So did we.

We did not rush back into love. Some wounds heal into scars, and scars are not invitations to pretend the injury never happened.

Nearly two years after Bellavita, Luca and I sat beside Lake Michigan while the twins chased gulls.

“If I could change one thing—” he began.

“You can’t.”

“I know.”

I looked at him. “But you can change what happens next.”

Micah came running. “Dad! Mila put sand in my shoe!”

Luca stood. “That sounds serious.”

“It is!”

He ran toward them.

For years, I thought my story was about the man who stopped loving me.

It wasn’t.

It was about the woman who stopped blaming herself.

We could never recover the years Victor stole or the years we lost to silence. But the twins were laughing, Luca was laughing with them, and the past no longer had the power to decide our future.

Luca glanced back at me, no longer looking like the billionaire Chicago feared. He looked like a father silently asking if he was doing okay.

I smiled and nodded.

For the first time in a very long time, that was enough.
