Chapter 2 - The Message I Never Sent

I stared at Evelyn.
“What did you just say?”
Luca looked between us. “What does she mean?”
Evelyn’s face stayed composed, but the woman had gone pale. “Not here.”
“No,” I said. “Right here is fine.”
Micah and Mila were watching us with wide eyes. That stopped me. Whatever Luca and I had destroyed years ago, the children did not deserve to stand inside the wreckage.
I crouched. “Sweethearts, Ms. Renee is by the front desk. Go ask her if she can show you the dessert case.”
Mila narrowed her eyes. “Are you mad?”
“A little.”
“At him?”
“Go.”
Once they were out of earshot, Luca stepped closer. “Answer me.”
I laughed once, without humor. “You want answers now?”
“Nia.”
“I found out I was pregnant three weeks after I moved out.”
His jaw tightened.
“I called your office. I emailed. I sent a letter by courier. Your chief of staff called me back and said you wanted no further contact unless it came through attorneys.”
Luca’s voice turned flat. “Who?”
“Victor Dane.”
Something flashed across his face.
Victor had been Luca’s closest adviser since business school. He was the man who stood beside Luca at our wedding. The man who sat in our kitchen after my third failed fertility treatment and told Luca, gently, that some marriages were “too damaged by disappointment to survive.”
“I never told Victor that,” Luca said.
I folded my arms. “He quoted you.”
“What exactly did he say?”
I remembered every word.
“Mr. Moretti has moved on. He does not want another emotional claim made against him.”
Luca took one step backward as if I had struck him.
Evelyn whispered, “Oh, God.”
I looked at her. “Why do you know about this?”
She reached into her purse, pulled out her phone, and opened a photo.
It showed a scanned envelope with my handwriting.
LUCA MORETTI - PERSONAL.
Across the front was a red stamp.
INTERCEPTED - V.D.
Evelyn looked at me.
“I found this in Victor’s private archive two months ago.”
May you like
Luca’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
“What private archive?”
