Chapter 10 - THE MAID OF HONOR'S CONFESSION

Brooke came through June's back door after dark. She was twenty-eight, pale, and clutching her phone with both hands.

“I should've spoken up at the pool,” she said.

“You can speak now,” I answered.

She played a voice memo recorded earlier on the wedding day. Paige's voice was unmistakable.

“If Marissa starts asking about the documents, get Ryan across the room. I only need her away from him for ten minutes.”

Brooke's voice followed: “What if she won't leave?”

“Then I'll make her.”

Another recording began after the fall. I heard Brooke say, “You knew about her shoulder.” Paige answered, “That was the point. She won't be waving papers around tonight.”

The room was silent when it ended.

I had expected to feel triumph. Instead my heart thudded in my throat. The voice on the recording belonged to the woman who had sat in my kitchen and asked for Thomas's apple-pie recipe. I had been so pleased to give it to her. I had imagined her making it for Ryan on his birthday.

Now that same voice was explaining how to separate us long enough to hurt me.

“I started recording because she scared me,” Brooke said. “I thought she was going to embarrass Marissa, not hurt her.”

“Why didn't you stop her?” Ryan asked.

“I tried. And then I froze.” Tears rolled down Brooke's face. “I'm sorry.”

I believed the apology. That didn't erase the delay.

Teresa, listening on speakerphone, told Brooke to preserve the original files and not edit or repost them. Brooke agreed to make a statement to the police.

Ryan stood at the kitchen sink, looking outside at the dark garden.

“She was planning it before she walked toward Mom.”

His phone lit up with a message from Paige: COME HOME. WE CAN STILL FIX THIS.

Before he could respond, Brooke's screen flashed.
