Chapter 17 - THE HEARING

The courthouse smelled of floor polish and burned coffee. My sling showed beneath a plain gray jacket. I had chosen not to hide it.

Graham arrived in a navy suit, smiling for cameras. Paige followed several steps behind. She looked exhausted, but the sight of her still made my shoulder tense.

The hearing concerned the disputed property agreement, not whether Paige was guilty of assault. Teresa kept those issues separate. She presented my deed, therapy records establishing my whereabouts when I supposedly signed, and the notary's written statement. She also showed the court evidence supporting our request to protect the property while the dispute was investigated.

Graham's attorney argued that I had encouraged negotiations and later changed my mind because of a family disagreement.

“I never agreed to sell,” I told the judge when asked. “And I never authorized another person to sign for me.”

Ryan testified about the misleading tablet presentation. His voice wavered when he described the wedding, but he did not change his story to spare Paige.

The judge issued temporary protections against relying on the contested agreement while the matter proceeded. She made no criminal findings and emphasized that the evidence would be tested further.

Outside the hearing room, Paige caught my eye across the corridor. For a heartbeat she looked like she wanted to speak. Then Graham touched her elbow, and she turned away. I wondered how many times she had let him decide what kind of person she would be that day.

I should have felt relief. Instead I looked at the wedding ring Ryan had moved to his other hand.

Outside, Graham approached us before our attorneys could intervene.

“You think that settles it?” he asked.

“Walk away,” Ryan said.

Graham held up a photocopy of Thomas's signature. “Your father took money from me for that land. Ask your mother why he never told her.”

For a moment I couldn't breathe.

Because the signature was real.
