Chapter 3 - THE ENVELOPE IN MY SHOE

I had carried the blue envelope into the ballroom because I didn't trust the mail that arrived before breakfast.

Inside was a proposed sale of Cedar Point to Weller Development, Graham's company. The letter congratulated me on “our agreed terms” and requested my signature before Monday. I had agreed to nothing.

“Who else knew about it?” Ryan asked.

“Paige saw it sticking out of my bag. She asked whether I'd read it.”

“And you said?”

“I said we needed to talk after the ceremony.”

Ryan leaned back in his chair. “She told me you wanted to sell the property. I told her you never would.”

“Why would she tell you that?”

He had no answer.

I reached carefully under my left shoe and pulled out a folded, damp sheet wrapped in a plastic sleeve. The actual letter was hidden in the lining. My handbag had held only the empty envelope.

Ryan almost smiled. “Dad taught you that trick.”

“Your father taught me not to leave important papers unattended.”

We photographed the letter and sent it to my attorney, Teresa Vaughn. Then Ryan called the number from the message. A recorded voice said the line was unavailable.

Just after midnight, someone posted a short clip from the wedding. It showed me falling, not the contact that caused it. The caption read: MOTHER OF THE GROOM MAKES A SCENE.

Comments arrived by the hundreds. Some said I had been drinking. Others called me jealous of the bride.

“I had one glass of lemonade,” I said.

Ryan shut the phone off. “I know.”

A new message appeared before the screen went dark. It was from Brooke.

I TRIED TO GET THE ORIGINAL VIDEO. SOMEONE HAS ALREADY DELETED IT.
