Chapter 1 - The Language They Thought I Didn't Know

Lukas smiled when he said it in German.
"Sophia is pregnant. Five months. And yes, the baby is mine."
I stood behind him with a cake knife in my hand.
Nobody at the table looked at me. That was the insult. They were not even nervous.
His sister Elisa laughed first. Ingrid, his mother, lifted her wine and said, "Evelyn wants a baby so badly. She'll scream for a week, then she'll raise this one for us."
Lukas leaned back in his chair. "She has no idea what we're saying."
I set a slice of chocolate cake in front of him.
"Coffee?" I asked in English.
He squeezed my knee under the table like a loving husband.
I wanted to drive the knife through the cake plate.
Instead, I poured coffee.
For two years I had studied German after work, first because I wanted his family to stop treating me like a guest. Later, because I realized they became honest only when they thought I was deaf.
That night, Lukas slept beside me while I wrote down every sentence I remembered.
Sophia. Five months. My baby. Evelyn will raise it.
At 8:13 the next morning, an unknown number called.
"Evelyn Vance?"
I knew the voice.
Sophia Weber.
"I already know you're pregnant," I said.
She went silent.
Then she whispered, "Lukas told me you agreed."
"Agreed to what?"
"To us. To the baby living with him most of the time."
My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.
"Sophia, I agreed to nothing."
She started crying.
Then she said Ingrid had called her the day before and used almost the same words I had heard at dinner.
"She said once the baby is born, you would get attached and everything would become easier."
"Easier for who?"
Sophia breathed into the phone.
"I don't know. But Lukas made me sign something last month."
I stood.
"What did you sign?"
"He called it a family support agreement."
A paper rustled on her end.

Then Sophia's voice changed.
"Evelyn... your name is on it."
