Chapter 20 - The Language I Kept

I read the letter twice.

Eight years earlier, Dr. Feldman had tried to tell me the truth directly.

The clinic mailed the letter after Lukas stopped attending joint appointments.

Ingrid intercepted it at the family office because Lukas had once used that address for insurance correspondence.

She kept it.

Lukas claimed he never knew the letter existed.

I believed him.

That did not make me want him back.

"I loved you," he said.

We stood in my sister's quiet kitchen.

"I know."

"Doesn't that matter?"

"Love that requires me to carry your shame is not enough."

He looked at the divorce papers on the counter.

"So this is really over."

"It was over at the table when you laughed."

He flinched.

For once, I did not soften the truth for him.

Months later, the Continuity Trust transferred its voting block to the workers foundation after Lukas failed to establish a qualifying descendant.

Jonas's wage case moved forward with new company leadership negotiating instead of burying evidence.

Sophia gave birth to a healthy boy named Theo.

She did not ask me to raise him.

Nobody did.

I visited once at her invitation and held him for five minutes while she took a shower.

He smelled like milk and clean cotton.

I expected grief to crush me.

It did not.

It hurt, but it belonged to me now. Nobody was using it.

Elisa started therapy with someone her mother had never met.

Lukas moved out of the family house.

Ingrid's case dragged through motions, hearings, and lawyers who no longer laughed at the idea that her paperwork had hurt people.

As for me, I kept studying German.

Not because I needed to understand the Vances anymore.

Because I had earned the language for myself.

One Sunday morning, months after the divorce was final, I sat alone at a bakery with coffee and a slice of chocolate cake.

A family at the next table switched from English to German.

The grandmother asked her grandson if he wanted the last strawberry.

He said yes.

I smiled.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Nina.
