Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Sophia waited until Ingrid was gone before speaking.
"I didn't pay for the test."
Jonas looked at her.
"Who did?"
"An anonymous patient assistance fund."
Nina was already typing.
The fund traced back to a shell nonprofit.
The nonprofit traced back to Vance Verwaltungs Holdings.
For one terrible minute, we wondered whether even the paternity result had been manipulated.
Detective Ruiz ordered an independent test through a court-approved lab.
The wait lasted three days.
Lukas stayed away from me.
I filed for divorce.
Sophia moved in with her aunt.
Jonas continued his labor case.
Then the new result arrived.
Lukas was excluded again.
Jonas was confirmed as the biological father.
Sophia cried when she read it.
Jonas did too.
Neither pretended that one report magically created a family.
They agreed only to start with honesty.
That was more than Lukas and I had managed in years.
The anonymous payment turned out to have a simpler purpose.
Ingrid wanted early certainty about paternity before deciding how aggressively to proceed.
She learned Lukas was not the father before Sunday dinner.
She told him to announce the pregnancy anyway.
Lukas knew the baby might not be his.
But he did not know she already had proof.
That distinction did not save him.
It only showed how many layers of lying existed inside one family.
On Friday, prosecutors charged Peter with fraud-related offenses and referred Ingrid's conduct for additional charges tied to forged filings and attempted unlawful confinement.
Lukas was not charged in the same way.
But the company board removed him from management pending review.
That evening he came to my apartment with one envelope.
"I found this in my mother's safe," he said.
Inside was a letter written to me.
Dated eight years earlier.
From Dr. Feldman.
