Chapter 4 - THE STORY RYAN TRIED TO SELL

By the time officers arrived, Ryan had built a new version of the night.
In his version, Diane had picked up the broom handle only because I was screaming and throwing things.
In his version, I had shoved her first.
In his version, he grabbed my arm to protect his elderly mother from his violent wife.
He told it smoothly.
That was what terrified me. This wasn't improvisation. Ryan had spent years making little jokes about me being "emotional" or "stressed." I had laughed them off. Now those jokes had become the foundation of his lie.
Officer Lena Ortiz listened without interrupting.
Then she asked me to describe what happened.
I did.
Diane stood near the dining room doorway with her arms crossed, occasionally shaking her head for dramatic effect.
"She's twisting everything," she said.
Officer Ortiz turned toward her. "Ma'am, please let her finish."
When I finished, Ortiz asked, "Was there any recording?"
Ryan answered too quickly.
"No."
I looked at him.
Then I looked at the camera.
"Yes."
Marcus handed Ortiz a tablet connected to the preserved feed.
Ryan's mouth opened.
"Claire, wait."
Ten seconds earlier, I was a dangerous liar. Now I was suddenly his wife again.
"For what?"
"We should talk privately before you do this."
Officer Ortiz's eyes moved between us.
"Mr. Mercer, step back."
Marcus opened the file.
The video began with Diane shouting near the sink.
Then came the first swing.
Then the second.
Then my hands catching the pole.
Then Ryan grabbing me.
Then my slap.
Then Ryan ordering me to apologize.
Diane went pale. Ryan whispered, "Oh, God."
But the recording wasn't finished.
Because before the fight, the microphone had captured something I hadn't heard at the time.
Something Diane said to Ryan when she thought I was upstairs.

Marcus increased the volume.
And my husband looked like he wanted the floor to open beneath him.
