Chapter 8 - WHAT DIANE KNEW

Ryan asked for a lawyer.

The officers separated him from us and brought him into the front sitting room.

Diane immediately began acting confused.

"I don't understand any of this," she said. "Ryan handles paperwork. I don't know anything about business."

The camera audio said otherwise.

So did her phone.

She had left it on the kitchen island during the fight.

When it lit up with a message, I did not touch it. Marcus didn't either. But the preview was visible on the lock screen.

RYAN: DELETE THE DRAFT I SENT YOU.

Officer Ortiz saw it.

Diane snatched the phone away.

"Private communication!"

"Don't delete anything," Ortiz warned.

"You can't tell me what to do with my own phone."

"I can tell you that destroying potential evidence after being advised to preserve it may create additional problems for you."

Diane froze.

She slowly set the phone back down.

Then she looked at me.

"You did this to him."

"No."

"You made him feel small. You made him live in your house, drive a car you paid for, attend events where everyone knew you were more successful. What did you expect?"

There it was.

Not denial.

Justification.

"I expected my husband not to forge my signature."

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

"He deserved security."

"So you helped him steal mine?"

She stood abruptly.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Sit down, ma'am."

She ignored him and pointed at me.

"Everything was fine until you started talking about selling that logistics stake. Ryan said once the money came in, you would have enough to leave whenever you wanted."

My throat tightened.

I had never threatened to leave.

Ryan had been planning for a future betrayal I hadn't committed.

Or maybe that was simply the story he told his mother because greed sounded uglier without fear attached to it.

Officer Ortiz looked toward the sitting room where Ryan waited.

"Ms. Mercer, did your son ask you to help pressure Ms. Bennett into signing financial documents?"

Diane's eyes flickered.

That was all Ortiz needed to see.

Then a new voice came from the front hallway.

"Claire?"

I turned.

My younger brother, Evan, stood beside another security guard.

And the moment he saw my arm, his face went white.
