Chapter 4 - The Message From Me

The emergency department ceiling passed over my head in bright, white squares.

"Mariana? I'm Dr. Shah." A woman in navy scrubs walked beside the stretcher. "Your bleeding could mean the placenta has started separating. We need to check both of you immediately."

"Can you save her?"

"We're going to do everything we can."

A nurse placed two fingers in my palm. "Squeeze if you understand." I squeezed until she said, "Easy, honey. I'm right here."

Then Daniel burst through the curtains. His tie hung loose, and his face looked as if someone had punched all the air out of him.

"Mariana! Mom told me you were resting. You texted me not to come home."

"I didn't." I gripped his sleeve. "She took my phone."

"What?"

"Show me."

His screen read: I'M FINE. DON'T CALL. I NEED SLEEP. There was a second message, sent only twenty minutes earlier: DON'T LET THEM MAKE A FUSS.

"That's not me, Danny."

He looked from the words to my face. Whatever answer he'd been ready to give disappeared.

A machine beside us began beeping faster. Dr. Shah watched its screen, then my stomach.

"We have a concerning fetal heart-rate pattern," she said. "Mariana, I'm recommending an emergency C-section. We'll explain as we move."

Daniel bent to kiss my forehead. "I'm here. I'm not leaving."

I wanted to believe him. But as the nurses pushed me toward surgery, I remembered how I'd begged the locked bedroom door to open while he was driving miles away.

"Promise me something," I said.

"Anything."

"Don't let your mother tell our daughter what happened. Tell her the truth."

His eyes filled. "You tell her yourself."

The operating-room doors opened. Someone asked me to count backward. I watched Daniel vanish behind the closing doors.

The last sound I heard wasn't his voice.

It was Dr. Shah saying, "Her heart rate is dropping. We need to deliver now."
