Chapter 6 - The Signature She Needed

"Why would the orchard need my signature?" I asked.
Daniel pulled his chair closer. "Because you're a forty-percent owner. You put your savings into the business when we married. Mom couldn't borrow against it without you."
I remembered the day we'd signed the partnership agreement. Daniel had squeezed my hand and said, "No more people calling you a guest in your own home." Ruth had watched us from the corner of the attorney's office without smiling.
"I found papers in the kitchen yesterday," I said slowly. "A loan for almost nine hundred thousand dollars. I asked Ruth about it. She said it was an old draft."
"She never mentioned a loan to me."
My stomach tightened, not with pain this time, but recognition. "She knew I'd tell you."
Daniel searched the email chain. A lender named Victor Hale had written that all owners needed to appear or provide independently verified authorization. Below it, Ruth had replied: My daughter-in-law is indisposed. Use the papers already supplied.
"What papers?" I asked.
He opened an attachment. On the final page, beneath a company resolution authorizing the orchard to secure the loan, appeared the name Mariana Mercer in a graceful slant.
It looked like my handwriting. Almost.
"I sign the last letter with a loop," I said. "This one doesn't have it."
Daniel stared at the page. "She forged you."
"And this morning she kept me in bed because she needed me quiet."
He rose so abruptly his chair scraped the floor. "I'm calling the police."
"Call our lawyer first. Tell the hospital everything. And Daniel?"
He stopped.
"Don't call her alone. I don't want her turning your love for her into another weapon."
His face crumpled. "I've let her do that for years."
He left to make the calls. A few minutes later my phone buzzed on the bedside table. An unknown number had sent an attachment: a photograph of another document, signed and dated.

This one wasn't just a loan authorization.
It was a deed transferring the orchard's packing house to Victor Hale's company.
