Chapter 12 - The Woman They Planned to Blame

Tessa had me obtain certified statements from my actual business bank. No $87,000 deposit appeared. The city auditor confirmed that the account receiving the money belonged to a newly formed company with a similar name, not mine.

"That doesn't make you safe yet," Tessa warned. "It makes the difference provable."

Rose agreed to speak formally with investigators. She brought a cardboard box of duplicate invoices and emails she'd kept because she feared someone would erase the accounting system. She hadn't taken originals from the office; her copies showed the dates and recipients, and investigators could obtain the source records.

"I signed off on the first invoice," Rose admitted. "I thought the parts were being ordered. When I realized they weren't, I stopped."

I wanted someone uncomplicated to hate. Rose wouldn't give me that. She'd made a mistake, then tried to correct it. Diane and Ryan had made choices over and over. Rose stared at her shoes as she told us about the first invoice. I thought of every time I had delayed confronting Ryan because I was afraid of what an argument might do to our marriage. Silence had been expensive for both of us, but the cost to the Eastbank residents was worse.

That evening, my largest client called to pause our next phase of work.

"It's not personal," he said.

"It is to the people who work for me."

I told Luis the news. He set his coffee down without finishing it.

"We'll take repair calls. Cash jobs if we have to. I'll tell the crew the truth."

"You shouldn't have to defend me."

"I know. I'm doing it anyway."

At nine, someone slid a thick envelope beneath my front door. The door camera showed a delivery driver who never looked up.

Inside was a draft agreement, already dated for the morning after Diane attacked me. It required me to acknowledge the mortgage, release Diane and Ryan from liability, and retract my police statement.

The signature line was blank.

Above it, in Ryan's handwriting, were the words: She'll sign after the incident.
