Chapter 17 - The Truth Ryan Chose

Ryan arrived at the station with an attorney and, for once, no rehearsed explanation. Officer Chen told me later what he had admitted. Tessa made sure I heard it through the proper channels rather than from another desperate phone call.

He had approved the forged mortgage documents, supplied my old contracts, arranged the camera outage, and hired the men to disable my camera and steal the business laptop that held my real financial records. He'd also helped Diane disguise grant payments through the counterfeit vendor account.

His mother had directed parts of the scheme. He had carried out others himself.

When he finally asked to speak with me, I agreed only to a supervised meeting in Tessa's office. He looked thinner. His jacket hung open, and he kept turning his wedding ring around his finger. He admitted he had sent the draft agreement to my door after the assault. He called it a warning. I called it another attempt to control what I said.

"I thought I could fix everything before you found out," he said.

"By putting my house at risk?"

"The business was failing. Mom said we'd lose the Eastbank contract."

"So you took money meant to keep older people safe."

His face crumpled. "I didn't think about it like that."

"You didn't think about me, either."

Ryan set my wedding ring on the table. I didn't reach for it.

"I never meant for her to hit you."

"You filmed it happening. Then you lied in court."

He looked down. "I know."

I stood to leave. He asked whether we could ever be family again.

"We were family when you made these choices," I said. "That's the part you keep forgetting."

At the door, Tessa stopped me with a call from the city auditor.

Investigators had traced the fake vendor payments.

The final account holder wasn't Diane.

It was Ryan.
