Chapter 8 - Six Minutes of Darkness

Officer Chen invited Tessa and me to the station the next afternoon. The footage was now preserved, and an investigator had synchronized the camera's clock against the alarm system.

"Your husband cut power to the router," Chen said. "Not the battery camera. He tried to create a blind spot."

We watched the minutes before Diane entered the kitchen. Ryan set his phone on the counter, lens facing the center of the room. He tested the angle, then moved a vase two inches to the left.

"That's where their edited video came from," I said.

Ryan stepped off-screen. Diane walked in carrying the broom handle and stopped beside him.

Their voices were faint but clear enough.

"Don't get carried away," Ryan said.

"She'll hit back," Diane replied. "Then she'll do what we need."

My stomach turned.

For years, Diane had told me I was dramatic when I objected to her making copies of my house keys or opening my mail. Ryan had called those incidents misunderstandings. Now I watched him arrange a camera to catch a fight they expected to provoke.

"Do what?" Chen asked.

I told her about Ashbrook, the $640,000 lien, and the signature I never wrote. She opened another case file and asked me to provide the documents through Tessa.

"This isn't just a family dispute," she said.

Before leaving, she showed me one still image: a man standing beside Diane on my porch the day of the fraudulent property inspection. His face was visible in the reflection of the front window.

He was holding a clipboard stamped with Ashbrook's logo.

Tessa recognized him immediately.

"That's Cole Darrow," she said. "He's the broker who arranged the loan."
