Chapter 18 - The Name She Couldn't Steal

My mother's name was on the transfer request as an authorized guarantor. The date was yesterday. Mom had been dead for eight years.
"They're not even trying to make it believable anymore," I said.
"They're desperate," June answered. "And desperate people leave trails."
Adrienne and the bank's fraud team blocked the transfer and preserved the supporting documents. Samantha had submitted them from a hotel business center in Macau. Her lawyer called an hour later, insisting she'd been misled by Carlos.
"She told me that too," I said. "Right after she held a truck full of medicine hostage."
Adrienne didn't smile. "Let the records speak. If she cooperates, investigators may learn who supplied the original package and who forged the documents."
Over the next three days, pieces arrived from different directions. The intermediary who had delivered the sealed bag to Marta identified the person who paid him. Salazar's cousin admitted the warehouse invoices covered services never performed. A former Northstar clerk brought June emails she'd kept because their instructions felt wrong.
The clerk was twenty-three. She had been afraid of losing her job and ashamed she'd stayed quiet. When she called me, she cried so hard she could barely speak.
"I thought if I waited, someone else would fix it."
"You came forward now," I told her. "That matters."
I wanted to be angry at everyone who had looked away, but I remembered how long I'd done the same at home. I had mistaken peace for safety because asking difficult questions might have broken my marriage.
An independent review finally confirmed that the emergency succession resolution was invalid. The board restored my authority, kept June in charge of finances, and referred all disputed payments to forensic auditors.

That evening, Adrienne called with one last discovery from the corporate archives.
"Elena, the first false payment wasn't made after your mother's death. It was made before you married Carlos."
