Chapter 6 - The Last Breakfast

At five fifteen, Marta came downstairs in a cream robe and found me flipping eggs in the kitchen.
"You sweet girl," she said. "I was going to cook for you."
I nearly laughed. I'd watched her prepare a different kind of goodbye only hours earlier. Instead, I put a plate in front of her.
"You always say I don't eat enough before flying."
She patted my hand. "That's because I worry about you."
Carlos entered with his laptop tucked under his arm. He wore the watch I'd given him on our fifth anniversary. His eyes moved from me to my suitcase by the front door.
"All packed?"
"Just waiting for the driver."
"I can carry your bag."
"It's light. I've got it."
A flicker crossed his face. If he suspected the package had been removed, he didn't show it. Nina was outside in a company car; investigator Santos had instructed me to follow the ordinary departure routine while officers documented what happened next.
Marta pushed a small container of mango slices toward me. "For the plane. You know how you get hungry."
I remembered Mom slicing mangoes for me while we sat on the hood of her delivery truck, watching sunrise over the warehouses. Kindness used to feel simple.
Carlos leaned over and kissed my cheek. "Text when you reach security."
"I will."
I rolled the suitcase toward the door. Behind me, Marta called, "Elena?"
I turned. She was holding the little blade she'd used during the night. Its silver edge caught the kitchen light.
"Found this near your bag," she said. "You should be more careful."
Carlos stopped chewing. I could feel them measuring my reaction.
"Thanks," I said, taking the blade by its handle. "I'll try."
Outside, Nina opened the car door, and I climbed in without looking back.
We hadn't reached the corner when Santos called.
"Elena," she said, "the person hired to alert airport security has just reported to us. He claims your husband ordered him to send a photograph at the moment your bag was opened."
May you like
"A photograph of what?"
"Of you in handcuffs. And he says Carlos already paid for the picture."
