Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Warning

I stared at the unknown message until the screen dimmed. Someone knew. That should have made me feel safer. Instead, it made every shadow in the bedroom seem alive.

I typed, WHO IS THIS?

The answer came at once. JUNE. USE THE OLD WORK PHONE. NOT YOUR PERSONAL ONE.

June Villanueva was my chief financial officer. Quiet, sharp, allergic to drama. If June had found a reason to text me at one in the morning, there was a reason.

The old work phone sat in a kitchen drawer, cracked at one corner and forgotten by everyone except me. I crept past the study. Through the door came Carlos's easy laugh, the one he'd used on our first date.

"She's too trusting," he said. "That's the whole problem with her."

My bare feet felt numb on the tile. I found the phone, connected it to the home Wi-Fi, and called June through an encrypted work account. Her face appeared under the harsh light of her office.

"Elena, listen carefully. Someone tried to authorize a transfer of fourteen million dollars from Northstar Medical Logistics at eleven forty. It used your credentials. I stopped it."

"Carlos?"

"The request came from his department. And the beneficiary is a Macau holding company tied to Samantha Price."

I braced myself against the counter. Northstar moved temperature-controlled medical supplies between hospitals and clinics. Mom had started it with one rented truck. I had spent twelve years growing it into a company that kept medicine arriving when storms closed roads.

"They put something in my luggage," I whispered. "I saw Marta do it."

June went still. "Did you record her?"

"No. I was pretending to sleep."

"Then don't confront anyone. I can get our lawyer."

Footsteps sounded beyond the kitchen. Carlos was leaving the study.

"June, I have to go."

"One more thing," she said fast. "Carlos downloaded a document titled EMERGENCY SUCCESSION. It has your signature on it."

"I never signed that."

June's next words came just as Carlos's shadow spread across the kitchen floor.

"Elena, according to this document, you gave him power over the company yesterday."
