Chapter 12 - The Message That Broke Me

Nina filed an emergency request for relief early Monday morning and made sure the title company, lender, and buyer's attorney received the dispute notice. I didn't sleep more than an hour.
At seven, Natalie called from a number I didn't recognize.
"You need to understand," she said. "Daniel was going to repay the loan."
"With whose money?"
"The sale. Then everyone could start over."
"Everyone except the woman whose house you sold."
She sniffed. "Mom didn't mean for the soup to burn you."
I sat upright. "You knew she'd do it?"
Silence.
"Natalie."
"She only wanted you out of the room. Daniel said you'd make a scene if you saw the papers."
"So they planned to frighten me."
"It wasn't supposed to get physical."
I remembered Daniel chewing dinner while I lay on the floor. The shame I'd felt was suddenly replaced by something colder and clearer.
"Send me the messages," I said. "Not screenshots you crop. The full thread. Send them to Nina."
She hung up.
Forty minutes later, Nina received an export of the family group chat. Natalie hadn't sent everything, but she'd sent enough.
On Thursday, Teresa had written: Make her carry the soup. She won't leave the table if she's serving.
Daniel replied: Just get her upset enough to go upstairs. I'll tell everyone she agreed to move out.
Then Teresa: If she refuses, I'll handle her.
The last text from Daniel made my throat close.
Don't do anything that leaves marks. We need this clean until Monday.
He had known there might be violence. He had worried about evidence, not me.
I called Nina. "I want it all reported. Even the part that makes me look foolish for staying."
May you like
"Being betrayed isn't evidence that you were foolish," she said.
Then she lowered her voice. "Emily, the lender's fraud investigator just found a second version of your signature. This one was used on a deed."
