Chapter 16 - The Next Asset

The folder marked NEXT ASSET wasn't about me.
It was about Robert.
Inside were copies of his retirement account statements, a medical appointment calendar, and a draft document authorizing Teresa to manage his finances if he became unable to make decisions. Someone had highlighted the signature line.
"They were going after him too," I said.
Nina didn't soften it. "It appears they were preparing to. That doesn't mean they succeeded."
I called Robert and told him what the investigators had found. He didn't speak for a long time.
"I defended them," he said finally. "I stayed quiet because I thought my family was in trouble."
"They were in trouble," I said. "They wanted you to pay for it."
He came to Tessa's apartment with a small paper bag of ginger cookies. He'd been bringing those to my house every Christmas since the year Daniel and I married.
"I don't expect you to forgive me," he said.
"Good. I'm not ready."
He sat across from me and told me he'd begun to doubt his memory after Teresa repeatedly said he was confused. She'd taken him to appointments and insisted on speaking for him. Now he wondered whether that had been care or preparation.
"You deserve to make decisions about your own money," I told him. "Talk to your lawyer. Don't sign anything they bring you."
He nodded and accepted the number for an independent elder-law attorney.
Then he set his wedding ring on the table. "I don't know what my marriage was anymore."
I understood the feeling too well.
We sat without speaking until Tessa returned from work.
As Robert left, my phone lit up with a text from Daniel.
I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. WE NEED TO TALK BEFORE YOU RUIN MY MOTHER.
May you like
I showed it to Tessa. She pulled the curtains closed.
A car door slammed in the parking lot below.
