Chapter 18 - The Woman in the Photograph

An elderly woman stood on the dock beside Carlo.
I recognized her from exactly one photograph in my father's study.
Elena Moretti.
My father's first love.
The woman we had been told died before Matteo and I were born.
"This is insane," I said.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father told me that once too."
The truth came out in pieces.
Sofia had been my father's political marriage, chosen to merge two families. Elena had already given birth to Matteo and me in secret. When threats closed around them, my father brought us to the Rossi estate and publicly claimed Sofia as our mother.
Elena was sent away under a new identity.
"Why come back now?" Grace asked.
"Because Sofia found me three months ago. She threatened Nicholas if I ever contacted you."
My chest tightened.
"She knew the DNA would expose her."
Elena nodded.
Suddenly the obsession made even more sense.
Sofia was not protecting a bloodline.
She was protecting the lie that gave her permanent authority inside it.
If Nicholas's trust triggered genetic documentation or inheritance review, old records could surface.
Grace looked at Matteo.
"So all of this - the money, the prison, the forged declaration - was about control."
"Control and survival," he said.
Elena handed me a notarized packet from my father.
Inside was a letter written before his death.
If Sofia ever used the family against my sons, the letter said, control of the Rossi trust was to pass jointly to Luca and Matteo, with independent oversight.
My father had anticipated her.
He had simply died before activating the protection.
Sirens approached the marina.
Helen Ward's cars.
Matteo stood and held out his hands.
"Time to answer for what I did."
Before the officers reached him, Grace touched his arm.
"You should answer for it."
He nodded.
"I know."
"But you also brought my son out alive."
Matteo's face broke.
May you like
Then Helen Ward arrived with news none of us expected.
Sofia had escaped from the hospital.
