Chapter 2 - The Man in the Dark

I spun with my hand inside my jacket.

"Show yourself."

A shape moved behind the half-open bathroom door.

Carlo stepped out.

He looked older than he had ten minutes earlier.

"Don't shoot, Luca."

I lowered my hand but not my anger.

"You were hiding in here?"

"I followed you. I couldn't speak in front of your mother."

I pointed to the wall.

"Did Grace write that?"

Carlo nodded.

Something inside me went quiet in the worst possible way.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

I grabbed his shirt.

"Wrong answer."

"I swear. I helped her once. Only once."

He told me the west wing had been closed three months earlier after my mother claimed mold had been found behind the walls. Staff were forbidden to enter. Food went in on trays. Medical supplies arrived in unmarked boxes.

"Why didn't you call me?"

His eyes filled with shame.

"Your mother said Grace was unstable. She said if anyone interfered, you would lose the peace agreement and people would die."

"And you believed her?"

"At first."

He reached into his pocket and handed me a small brass key.

"Then Grace slipped this under the door with a note."

I stared at it.

"What note?"

"Your mother found it before I could hide it. She burned it."

"What did it say?"

Carlo's voice cracked.

"She wrote, 'Tell Luca I'm still here.'"

I looked around the room again.

There were scratches on the floor where a chair had been dragged toward the window. A broken drinking glass. A strip of torn blue fabric caught beneath the bed frame.

Grace had fought to leave evidence.

I bent and picked up the fabric.

It matched the maternity dress she had worn during our last video call.

Then I noticed four small holes in the wall beside the bed.

Not random holes.

Mounting holes.

Something had been removed.

"What was here?" I asked.

Carlo swallowed.

"A camera."

"Who watched it?"

He looked toward the hallway.

"Your mother wasn't the only one with access."

Before he could say another name, footsteps approached the steel door.

Slow.

May you like

Heavy.

And familiar.
