Chapter 20 - Home

Three months later, the west wing was gone.
I had the steel doors removed first.
Then the bars.
Then the walls themselves.
Grace stood in the garden with Nicholas asleep against her chest while workers carried the last pieces of the underground cell into a dumpster.
"You sure you don't want to burn the whole estate down?" I asked.
She smiled.
"Ask me again on a bad day."
Sofia remained in custody awaiting trial on kidnapping, fraud, coercion, and conspiracy charges. Dario faced his own list. Enzo agreed to cooperate and surrendered his medical license. Matteo accepted responsibility for the surveillance system and financial access he had enabled; prosecutors took his cooperation and his rescue of Nicholas into account, but they did not erase what he had done.
That mattered to Grace.
"Saving someone later doesn't make the earlier betrayal disappear," she said. "It just means the story is complicated."
Elena visited every Sunday.
The first few times felt awkward.
Then Nicholas spit up on her silk blouse, and somehow that made us a family faster than any blood test could.
The Rossi trust was restructured under independent oversight. No single relative could secretly move money, remove a director, or use the family companies as a personal kingdom again.
As for me, I stepped away from the old business arrangements that had kept violence close enough to call tradition.
I had spent years believing power meant controlling every room I entered.
Grace taught me something harder.
Power also meant opening the door and letting the truth in.
One evening, she found me in the nursery holding the small blue cap she had knitted before Nicholas was born.
"You okay?" she asked.
"I'm trying to forgive myself for taking six months to come home."
She leaned against me.
"Then start by being here now."
Nicholas stirred in his crib.
I looked at the white railing where a drop of blood had once convinced someone they could rewrite our lives.
Now a wooden plaque hung above it.
Grace had carved the words herself.
NO LOCKED DOORS. NO FAMILY SECRETS.
I slipped her wedding ring back onto her finger.
"Still here?" I asked.
She smiled.
"Still here."
Then Nicholas opened his eyes and began to cry.
Grace laughed.
May you like
"Your turn, Dad."
For the first time in a long time, I was exactly where I had promised to be.
