Chapter 17 - The Door Opens Again

The earlier clip changed the shape of the case.

It showed Diane had handled the hub before Brianna entered the kitchen.

Later door-entry and street-camera records suggested Brianna returned after the ambulance left, apparently to collect the loose cables.

Investigators still had to determine why and what else she had done, but her claims that she knew nothing no longer fit the evidence.

Ortiz told us she'd forwarded the findings to the prosecutor.

I wanted to call Diane and ask how she could have looked at my pregnant stomach and imagined taking away the money meant to protect those two children.

Naomi persuaded me not to.

“Let the evidence speak,” she said. “You have already had to say enough.”

Searches and interviews moved quickly after that.

Elliot Sloane produced records showing the disputed guaranty had come through Brianna, with Diane listed as the family contact.

A handwriting examiner found significant differences between the questioned signature and my verified samples.

The dead notary's commission record supplied an even simpler contradiction.

Brianna was charged in connection with the assault and attempted coercion.

Diane faced separate allegations connected to the forged document and interference with evidence.

Those charges were accusations to be tested in court, not verdicts.

That mattered to me.

Ryan changed the locks and revoked every family access code.

He called the hospital to make sure his mother's name had been removed from all visitor permissions.

He sat with me while we wrote down the boundaries we would enforce even if his relatives apologized.

No unsupervised contact with the babies.

No access to our finances.

No messages through friends or neighbors.

Sophie began taking more of her milk without assistance.

Lucas was strong enough to leave intensive monitoring soon.

I let myself dream of holding them both in our living room.

That night Naomi called with what sounded like good news.

Brianna's attorney had asked about a negotiated resolution.

Then a second message arrived from the same office.

Brianna now claimed the recording was fake, and her defense intended to accuse Ryan of manufacturing it.
