Chapter 18 - The Lie Under Oath

Months passed before the courtroom became our new address for fear.
By then both babies were home, small and noisy and capable of turning a quiet morning upside down.
The prosecutor explained what the jury would be asked to decide.
The case wasn't about whether Brianna had been selfish at Christmas or cruel at family dinners.
It was about what happened in our kitchen, what she demanded, and what the evidence proved.
Her defense argued the audio had been altered.
They questioned whether the memory card came from our camera and suggested I had fallen before Brianna touched me.
The forensic examiner explained the device identifiers, file recovery process, time records, and the checks used to compare the recovered clips with the camera system.
The emergency dispatch recording placed Mrs. Alvarez's call minutes after the incident.
The hospital records documented my injuries and the timing of the emergency delivery.
I was frightened when I took the stand.
The courtroom clock seemed louder than the judge.
“Why didn't you give Brianna what she wanted?” the defense attorney asked.
“Because it wasn't hers.”
“Are you saying you never argued with her?”
“We argued. She wanted money for a debt I didn't owe. Then she hit me.”
“Were you angry?”
“Yes,” I said. “I was terrified, and I was angry.”
I heard a pen stop moving in the jury box.
The prosecutor played the recovered audio.
I kept my eyes on the wooden rail instead of on Brianna.
When her recorded voice said, “You can make more babies,” someone behind me drew in a sharp breath.
Then Ryan testified about the trust and how he had given his mother access to family information.
He did not spare himself.
“I confused helping my sister with protecting her from every consequence,” he said.
During a break, Brianna turned toward me in the hallway.
For a moment I thought she might apologize.
Instead she whispered, “You won't be happy until everybody hates me.”

I looked at her, finally unafraid to answer.
“You still think this is about you.”
