Chapter 2 - Two Heartbeats

At the hospital, every question sounded like a clock counting down.

“How many weeks?”

“Thirty-four.”

“Any bleeding before today?”

“No.”

“Did somebody hurt you?”

I caught the nurse's sleeve.

“My sister-in-law punched me.”

She didn't flinch or ask whether I was sure.

She repeated my words to the doctor and wrote them down.

That small act nearly broke me.

A doctor named Patel told me the babies were in distress and that waiting could make things worse.

The operating room lights were painfully bright.

A nurse held a phone beside my ear when Ryan called from Singapore.

“Em, talk to me.”

“Brianna wanted the trust password.”

A terrible pause.

“She hit me. Please believe me.”

“I believe you,” he said, his voice breaking. “I'm on the first flight I can get.”

They moved the bed before I could answer.

When I woke, sunlight fell across a yellow wall.

Mrs. Alvarez sat in a chair too small for her and held my hand.

“Both alive,” she told me immediately. “Both here.”

Sophie needed help breathing.

Lucas needed close monitoring.

They were tiny, exhausted, and stubborn enough to keep fighting.

I cried without shame.

Then Mrs. Alvarez handed me my phone.

Brianna had posted a photograph of herself crying, her mascara perfect and her caption carefully wounded.

Please pray for the babies. Emma had a terrible fall during an argument. I tried to help, but she became hysterical.

Underneath it, my mother-in-law Diane had written, Don't make this worse by blaming Brianna. Think about the children.

My hospital bracelet cut into my wrist while strangers called me unstable beneath the post.

I turned the screen facedown.

A woman in a dark jacket appeared at my door.

Her badge read DETECTIVE LENA ORTIZ.

“Emma,” she said gently, “we need to talk about your kitchen.”

May you like

I stared at her.

“Because somebody has already asked the police to erase what happened there.”
