Chapter 20 - Above Our Door

Ryan didn't answer in the parking lot.

He answered over the next year.

He went to counseling with me when I asked.

He learned to hear a boundary without treating it like a punishment.

He stopped forwarding his mother's messages to me and stopped promising that one more conversation would make everyone reasonable.

He also learned to change diapers at three in the morning without announcing that he deserved a medal.

Brianna received a prison sentence after the court considered the evidence, her history, and the harm caused.

Diane later entered a plea in her separate case involving the forged documents and interference with evidence.

I read the court notices and put them away.

I wasn't going to build a second life around waiting for their next move.

Sophie and Lucas needed therapy appointments and extra follow-up visits for a while.

Their doctors celebrated milestones we had once taken for granted.

A strong cry.

A steady weight gain.

A first laugh that startled the dog.

On the twins' first birthday, Mrs. Alvarez brought a cake with two uneven yellow stars.

Naomi sent a card addressed to Sophie and Lucas, promising them there would always be adults who understood the difference between love and ownership.

Ryan laughed at that line and said she had earned the right to say it.

After the guests left, I stood in the kitchen watching the babies crawl across a blanket.

Our new camera still hung above the door.

The police had returned it after the trial, and Ryan had asked whether I wanted to take it down.

I had thought about that for months.

“No,” I told him. “Leave it.”

I didn't want to pretend the worst day of my life had never happened.

I wanted to remember that evidence mattered, that people could help, and that I had found the strength to tell the truth even when someone else was determined to write my story.

Ryan stepped beside me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

Across the room, Sophie handed Lucas a toy and then immediately demanded it back.

They both burst into laughter.

I thought of Brianna's words, cruel and careless: You can make more babies.

She had been wrong about so much.

These weren't replaceable lives.

They were Sophie and Lucas, and they were here.

Above the doorway, the camera blinked blue.

This time, I smiled first.
