Chapter 1 - The Laugh Behind Room 304

"Touch my grandmother again, and this stops right here."

My voice came from the hospital doorway. Claudia's hand was still raised above Sara's head. My grandmother lay against a white pillow, one eye squeezed shut, her fingers trembling around a blanket. A monitor ticked beside her. On the nightstand stood the paper cup I had bought her on my last visit, before my deployment. She never threw anything away if it reminded her of somebody she loved.

Claudia turned. "Hugo? You're supposed to be in Lebanon."

"And you're supposed to be looking after her."

I was still in my Spanish Legion uniform, dusty from the train. Eight months overseas had taught me how to stay still while my heart hammered. It hadn't taught me how to see the woman who raised me crying because my brother's wife was laughing at her.

"It's a misunderstanding," Claudia said, lowering her hand. "Sara gets confused."

"I heard you call her a useless old woman."

"She refuses her treatment. Someone has to be firm."

Sara reached toward me. "Huguito."

I crossed the room and took her hand. Her skin felt papery. She had always smelled of orange peel and hand soap. Now she smelled of antiseptic. A faint bruise marked her wrist.

"I'm here, Abuela."

Claudia slipped a cream envelope into her handbag. I saw the blue seal of a notary's office before the zipper closed.

"What are those?"

"Private family business. Mateo knows."

My older brother was working in Bilbao and had been telling me Sara was doing fine. I couldn't decide which possibility frightened me more: that Mateo knew, or that he'd believed his wife.

I pressed the bedside call button. "I want her doctor. And I want whoever is responsible for this floor."

Claudia leaned close enough that only I could hear her. Her perfume was too sweet for a hospital.

"Make one accusation," she whispered, "and your grandmother won't survive tonight."

Then the door clicked behind us. I looked back. Claudia had turned the privacy lock before I reached the bed.

And she was standing between me and the only way out.
