Chapter 18 - What the Documents Could Finally Prove

I had imagined the truth arriving like thunder. Instead it came in careful sentences from people doing their jobs.

The land registry confirmed there had been an attempt to record a transfer under disputed authority. The hospital verified the suspicious paperwork and safeguarded Sara's records. A document examiner reported serious inconsistencies among the signatures. Witnesses placed Andrés and Claudia together when Sara appeared unable to understand what they were asking her to sign.

Nobody called the case finished. But for the first time the evidence no longer depended only on two frightened grandsons.

Mateo gave investigators his entire message history and admitted he'd approved what he believed was a repair application without examining it. His statement exposed a painful truth: Claudia hadn't needed him to be evil. She'd needed him to be careless.

Sara was well enough to speak with a qualified interviewer. She described being frightened, repeatedly told she would make her grandsons homeless, and pushed to put her name on papers she could not read clearly. She asked for her own independent decisions to be respected.

When I entered her room afterward, she said, "I don't want to be remembered as the woman they almost cheated."

"How do you want to be remembered?"

"As the one who kept the gate open."

I kissed her forehead. "That's already you."

A message came from Mateo: Claudia had emptied her personal closet and left their apartment. The police knew. He wasn't going after her.

Later Teresa told us a company account connected to the property deal showed a planned payment to Claudia on completion. The financial inquiry would determine its legal significance. Meanwhile the court extended protection against the sale and arranged independent oversight for any contested property decisions until Sara's rights were secure.

That night Sara asked us to bring her the old box of photographs.

"And call Teresa," she said. "I need to change something about what happens to this house after I'm gone."
