Chapter 11 - The Video They Wanted People to See

By lunchtime, half our town had watched me hit Mallory. The clip began with my arm raised and ended when she fell behind the bench. Someone had added the words BROTHER ATTACKS GRIEVING SISTER AT MOM'S FUNERAL.

A neighbor texted, Is this really you?

I typed Yes, then deleted it. A one-word answer would leave out Claire, Emma, and the flowerpot. A longer answer would sound like an excuse.

Jo found me staring at the phone.

"Put it away," she said. "You don't owe the internet a defense while your wife is in intensive care."

"But Emma might see it someday."

"Then let her hear the truth from you. All of it."

A nurse called us back to Claire's room. She'd squeezed two fingers on command. I smiled for the first time since the cemetery, then caught myself, afraid to trust even that small improvement.

Ortiz arrived that evening with a woman named June Ellis, a florist who had been delivering arrangements for the funeral.

"My van has a dashboard camera," June said. "I parked by the cemetery gate. It faces the path."

"Does it show Claire?" I asked.

June nodded. "I watched it. I wish I hadn't."

Her voice broke. "Your wife tried to move the little girl out of the way. I saw her do it."

Ortiz explained that the unedited footage included the moments before Mallory raised the pot and the minutes after the ambulance arrived. It also showed Grant standing close enough to intervene.

"Why didn't he?" I asked.

"That's one of my questions," Ortiz said.

I looked at the phone in my hand. Grant had used half the truth because he knew the whole truth would destroy his story.

Then June added something the camera couldn't record.

"I heard what your sister shouted before she threw it," she said. "And it wasn't just about a necklace."
