Chapter 17 - The Promise Behind the Cross

When Claire could speak without exhausting herself, she told me about Mom's last private conversation with her.

"Mallory was twelve when Evelyn promised her the cross," Claire said. "Your dad had already died. Mallory kept asking whether things that belonged to him would disappear too. Evelyn said, 'One day, this will be yours.'"

"Then why give it to you?"

"Because Grant knew there was a key inside it. Your mother was afraid he'd search the house. She asked me to carry it until Nora could secure the records. After that, she wanted to decide what was fair. She wasn't trying to punish Mallory."

I remembered the sound of Mallory shouting at the cemetery. She hadn't seen a key or a legal dispute. She'd seen proof, in her mind, that Mom had chosen someone else.

"She could have asked," I said.

"Yes," Claire replied. "She could have asked."

Nora read us the final page of Mom's letter. Evelyn had written it after learning about the forged contract.

Mallory, I promised you the cross because I wanted you to remember that your father loved you when you were frightened and small. I still love you. But love does not mean I have to let you take what belongs to others. If you confess, I will stand beside you while you make it right. I will not lie for you anymore.

For a moment, I could see Mallory at twelve, sitting alone on the back steps after Dad's funeral, swinging her feet above the grass. I'd sat beside her and promised we'd always look after each other.

We had confused looking after her with protecting her from consequences.

"What do you want me to do with the cross?" I asked Claire.

"For now? Keep it out of the argument. It's evidence. Later we can decide."

She reached for my wrist.

"There's something else, Ethan. Emma remembers what you did, too. You can't make her feel safe by pretending your part never happened."

I nodded, knowing the hardest conversation in our house was still waiting.
