Chapter 19 - Coming Home

Claire came home on a Thursday in early autumn. She used a cane outdoors, tired quickly and sometimes forgot a word she wanted. Her right hand still trembled when she tried to pour coffee. The house looked familiar, yet the distance from the kitchen to the bedroom seemed different now.
Emma had taped a paper sign to the front door: WELCOME HOME, MOMMY. One letter was backward. Claire loved it exactly as it was.
The first week was harder than anybody admitted. Claire hated needing help in the shower. Daniel hovered too much. Emma jumped whenever a plate broke or a door slammed. One evening Claire snapped at Daniel for moving a chair without asking, then cried because she had frightened Emma.
"We don't have to be perfect tomorrow," Daniel told them. "We just have to tell each other when something hurts."
Claire wiped her face. "And listen before we fix it."
A counselor helped Emma work through her memories. She could say now that Aunt Mallory had done something wrong and Daddy had done something wrong after that. She could also say she loved them without feeling required to forgive either choice.
Daniel completed his service hours at a community food program. He washed dishes and carried boxes, ordinary work that offered no audience or applause. He continued counseling even after it was no longer mandatory. Some days he still felt anger rush up when he saw the scar at Claire's hairline. He practiced leaving the room, breathing and coming back when he could speak without trying to punish someone.
Claire opened the box containing Helen's repaired silver cross.
"Helen wanted Emma to have this one day," Daniel said.
"Then we'll keep it for her," Claire replied. "When she's old enough to decide what it means."

That evening Emma asked to visit Grandma's grave. She wanted to bring flowers, but not in a pot.
Daniel looked at Claire. Claire nodded. They could make the trip together, slowly.
