Chapter 3 - A Promise Made in a Hallway

Dr. Priya Shah showed Daniel an image on a screen. A dark crescent pressed against Claire's brain. The fall had caused a serious head injury, and the team needed to remove the blood and relieve pressure.
Daniel signed the surgical consent with a trembling hand. They had signed a mortgage and daycare forms together, but nothing like this.
Ben sat beside him with two untouched paper cups of coffee. "Emma's with Ruth at my apartment. She ate half a grilled cheese. Then she asked if the doctors could sew her mommy's eyes open."
Daniel pressed his fists against his knees. "I wasn't there."
"You were talking to the funeral director."
"I should have stayed with them."
"You didn't throw the first pot."
"I threw the second one."
Ben didn't argue. His silence was worse than a defense.
A detective named Lila Moreno arrived before surgery was over. She said witnesses were being interviewed and both assaults were under investigation. Daniel described exactly what he'd done. He didn't call it an accident, and he didn't claim Mallory was coming after him when he swung.
"I wanted her to hurt," he admitted. "For one second, that was all I wanted."
Moreno closed her notebook. "Thank you for being clear. That matters, but it doesn't settle what happens next."
Daniel watched her leave, then stared at the wall until the doors opened again. Dr. Shah stood there in surgical scrubs. The operation had controlled the immediate bleeding. Claire was alive, but her brain was swollen, and the team was keeping her sedated while they monitored the pressure.
When staff let him into intensive care, Claire lay under thin blankets with tubes and monitors surrounding her. Daniel touched the edge of the bed, afraid his hand might hurt her.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "You protected Emma. I couldn't even protect you without making it worse."
Her eyelids didn't move.

As he stepped back, a nurse handed him a sealed bag of Claire's belongings. Inside lay Helen's silver cross, its chain twisted around a dried flower petal. Beneath the bag was a small card the hospital clerk had found in Claire's coat pocket.
In Helen's handwriting, it said: IF MALLORY ASKS ABOUT THE CROSS, TELL HER I ALREADY EXPLAINED WHY.
