Chapter 1 - The Sound That Stopped Dinner

The slap cut through the birthday music like a gunshot.

Eight-year-old Sophie stumbled into the lower cabinet. A ceramic bowl hit the floor and split in two. By the time Mark reached the doorway, his daughter had one hand against her cheek and the other wrapped around a small red key.

His sister stood over her.

"It was barely anything," Clara said. "She needs to stop being dramatic."

Mark didn't remember crossing the room. He only remembered how Sophie flinched when he bent down.

"Sweetheart, look at me." His voice came out thin. "Did she hit you?"

Sophie nodded once. A pink mark spread beneath her eye.

"You laid hands on my daughter? In my own house?"

"She grabbed something that doesn't belong to her," Clara snapped. "You're completely overreacting to an accident."

Sarah rushed in from the dining room. Twelve birthday guests fell silent in the doorway.

"How could you do something so terrible in my home?" Sarah demanded.

"I'm your guest! I never wanted this stupid dinner party!"

"You're my sister," Mark said. "That gave you a seat at this table. It never gave you permission to hurt my kid."

He picked Sophie up, careful not to touch her sore cheek. Sarah took out her phone and called for medical advice. Then she asked Mrs. Alvarez to stay with them as a witness.

Clara's expression changed when she noticed the red key between Sophie's fingers.

"Give me that," she said quietly.

Sophie buried her face in Mark's neck.

"Get out," Mark told Clara.

"Mark, don't embarrass me in front of everyone."

"You did that yourself. Leave before I call the police."

Clara stepped backward, but her eyes never left the key.

"You'll regret treating me this way," she whispered.

Mark opened the front door. "Watch me protect my family."

Only after Clara's car disappeared did Sophie lift her head.

"Daddy," she said, "Aunt Clara told me that if I showed you what I found, we'd lose our house."

Then she opened her fist and showed him what was scratched into the key: BASEMENT 3.
