Chapter 14 - The File They Couldn't Destroy

The forensic technician recovered the damaged video a day later. Mark and Sarah didn't watch it in front of Sophie. They sat with Ortiz and listened to the recording that had turned their family upside down.
Clara's voice was unmistakable. "Once the lane opens, Nolan gets his project, and I get enough to clear my debts. Mark doesn't read half the papers I send him."
Nolan answered, "You promised the signatures would hold."
"They will. He's my brother. He always gives me another chance."
Then Sophie appeared in the doorway, asking why Mommy's name was on the screen. Clara ordered her to stop recording. The video ended with footsteps and Sophie saying, "Don't touch me."
Sarah covered her mouth. Mark stared at the table, listening to his daughter say the words he hadn't been there to hear.
Ortiz turned off the recording. "This supports the fraud investigation and your child's account. We still have to establish what each person did. The file isn't a substitute for that work."
Clara was charged in connection with the assault, and investigators continued examining the property fraud. Through counsel she denied intending to injure Sophie. Nolan denied participating in any forgery.
Maya secured an order preventing the lender from proceeding against the disputed lien while its validity was litigated. The second disbursement was suspended. But the first $280,000 remained largely unaccounted for.
"Can we ever get that money back?" Sarah asked.
"Some of it may be frozen or recovered," Maya said. "I won't promise what I can't control."
That afternoon an accountant traced a payment from Nolan's company to an unfamiliar private investor. It was made two hours after the dinner party.
