Chapter 20 - WHAT THE WALKERS KEPT

Six months later, the Walker name was still on the building.
But almost everything behind it had changed.
Harrison Pike was awaiting trial on fraud, conspiracy, extortion, and charges connected to Charles Walker's death.
Martin Shaw accepted a plea deal and testified.
Mrs. Finch admitted helping hide records and assisting the attempt to take Noah.
Victoria faced charges for obstruction and for concealing her role in Celeste's death.
Her lawyers expected prison time to be limited.
Adrian did not interfere.
He visited her once before sentencing.
"Do you hate me?" she asked.
Adrian thought about Celeste.
About Gabriel.
About Noah screaming in the nursery.
"Some days."
Victoria nodded.
"I deserve that."
"That isn't the point."
"The point is that Noah will never be taught that love means protecting a family name at someone else's expense."
The restitution trust returned property, settled claims, and sold Walker assets to compensate families harmed by the old fraud.
Adrian lost more money than most people could imagine.
He slept better than he had in years.
Gabriel joined the new oversight board but refused a Walker title.
"I spent my life wanting the name," he told Adrian.
"Turns out I just wanted the truth."
Emma moved out of the nanny's room.
But she did not leave.
She rented a small house nearby and began training as a child therapist.
Adrian did not ask her to replace Celeste.
They started with coffee.
Then long walks with Noah between them.
Slowly, something honest grew where secrets had once lived.
Noah ran toward the swings.
Adrian watched from the path.
Noah suddenly turned and shouted, "Daddy!"
Adrian walked closer.
"Emma stay forever?"
Adrian knelt beside his son.
"That is Emma's choice too, buddy."
"You stay?"
"I want to."
Noah threw his arms around her.
Then he whispered something that made all three of them cry.
"Can I call you Mom sometimes?"
"You don't need my permission to love him."
"Only if you want to, sweetheart."
Noah smiled.
For years, the Walker fortune had been built on people being told where they belonged.
Who mattered.
Who had to disappear.
Who was allowed to speak.
In the end, the family kept very little of the fortune.
But they kept something the old Walkers had never understood.
May you like
A home where nobody had to earn the right to be loved.
And for Adrian, that was the first honest inheritance his family had ever given Noah.
