Chapter 8 - LOCKER 314

The downtown station was nearly empty when they arrived.

Gabriel parked at the curb.

Emma stayed in the truck with Noah while Adrian and Victoria ran inside.

Locker 314 was in the oldest corridor.

The brass key fit.

The red case was still there.

Then he saw the fresh scratch across the lock.

Someone had already tried to force it.

Victoria whispered, "Shaw was here."

A small keypad blinked on the side.

"You said Noah knows the code."

"Celeste built it around a phrase she taught him."

"He was a baby."

"Children remember sounds before they remember meaning."

Back in the truck, Emma showed Noah the red case.

The boy went completely still.

"Mommy."

"Yes, sweetheart."

The keypad displayed six blank spaces.

Wrong.

Wrong.

Wrong.

One attempt remained before the case locked permanently.

Victoria snapped, "Stop guessing."

"What did Mommy say about the red box?"

Noah frowned.

A lullaby.

Celeste sang it every night.

At the end, she always whispered the same six words.

"Home is where the brave stay kind."

Six words.

H W W T B S K.

Then Noah whispered, "Two four six."

Adrian saw it.

"What?"

"Charles used 246 for old Walker internal codes."

"One one nine."

Adrian entered 246119.

Inside were three envelopes, a ledger, and a second flash drive.

The top envelope read FOR ADRIAN.

Celeste's handwriting filled the page.

Adrian, if you found this, Victoria has already lied to you about why I died.

He looked at his mother.

The next line was worse.

The person you should fear most is the man who has been standing beside our family for years.

Adrian's phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared from an unknown number.

It showed Emma's apartment door hanging open.
