Chapter 17 - DEPARTURE GATE 32

Daniel called me from the road.

“She lied again.”

His voice was calm now, which frightened me more than anger.

“Do you want me to come?”

“No. I’m done making you stand between me and consequences.”

He reached the airport before Vanessa boarded.

I know what happened because he told me later, almost word for word.

He found her at Gate 32 with Linda and two suitcases.

Vanessa looked furious, not sick.

“You had me followed?”

“No. The hotel saw you leave.”

She glanced around. “I needed space.”

“You said you collapsed.”

“I panicked.”

“You said you’re pregnant.”

She went quiet.

Daniel sat across from her.

“I’m not asking for proof in an airport. I’m asking whether it’s true.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Linda whispered, “Honey…”

Vanessa snapped, “Don’t.”

Daniel waited.

Finally she said, “I thought I might be.”

“That is not what you told me.”

“I was late.”

“Did you take a test?”

Silence.

He closed his eyes.

“I wanted one night where you didn’t walk away,” she whispered.

Daniel stood.

“You had one. It was our wedding night.”

Vanessa grabbed his hand. “I love you.”

“I believe you love the version of me that never says no.”

That sentence ended the marriage before any legal document did.

He walked away before she boarded.

At the curb, he called me.

“I’m filing for annulment if Martin thinks the fraud supports it. Divorce if it doesn’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

Then his voice broke.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“I keep thinking about you standing there with cake on your face while I laughed.”

I closed my eyes.

“I know.”

“I don’t know how to fix that.”

“You don’t fix it with one apology.”

“What do I do?”

“You become someone who would never do it again.”

He was quiet.

Then he said, “I can try.”

That afternoon, police called Martin.

The forged guaranty investigation had taken a new turn.

The digital signature file did not originate from Vanessa’s laptop.

It came from Daniel’s office computer.
