Chapter 6 - FORTY-SEVEN MINUTES

The video did not prove forgery. It proved a lie. At 11:19 p.m., Vanessa drove out of the garage. At 12:06, she returned.

Daniel watched the clip in silence.

“I can explain,” she said.

He looked at her. “Please do.”

“I forgot my mother’s bracelet.”

“You told me you were upstairs with a migraine.”

“I didn’t want you worrying.”

“You left our rehearsal dinner, drove home, and lied about it?”

Her voice rose. “This is our wedding night. Are you seriously interrogating me because your mother is throwing a tantrum?”

The old Daniel might have folded. This Daniel only said, “Stop calling it a tantrum.”

Vanessa froze.

He had never said that to her before.

Aaron pulled Daniel aside, but I could still hear.

“If the bank concludes the guaranty was forged, they can freeze the pending credit extension.”

Daniel rubbed his face. “Payroll?”

“Ten days.”

“How much cash do we have?”

“Not enough.”

There it was: the real cliff beneath the wedding floor. One hundred twenty-seven employees depended on a company Daniel had pretended was healthy. Love could not hide that.

Martin leaned toward me. “You are not obligated to renew anything.”

“I know.”

Daniel heard him.

He came to me without the anger now.

“Mom, I need a few days.”

“For what?”

“To figure out what happened.”

“No. You need a few days to decide whether truth matters more than comfort.”

His eyes dropped.

Then Vanessa’s mother, Linda, pushed through the circle of guests.

She had been drinking champagne all evening, but she suddenly looked sober.

“This has gone far enough,” she said.

Vanessa snapped, “Mom, stay out of it.”

Linda ignored her.

She looked at me.

“Evelyn, there is something Daniel doesn’t know.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“Mom.”

May you like

Linda took a breath.

“The loan wasn’t Vanessa’s idea.”
