Chapter 3 - WHAT I HAD BEEN PAYING FOR

Mercer Urban Development had Daniel’s name on the glass doors, but my money had kept them open for years. Vanessa did not know.

Daniel had built a good business, then chased bigger projects and faster growth until debt stacked on debt. When a downtown project stalled, he came to my kitchen at two in the morning and cried into his hands.

“I’m going to lose everything.”

So I quietly guaranteed a credit line and bought preferred shares through my holding company. Daniel called me a “private investor.” I never asked for praise. I asked for honesty.

Martin opened the folder. “Daniel, as of Monday morning, the renewal of the $1.8 million guaranty requires Mrs. Mercer’s signature.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward him. “One point eight million?”

Daniel stepped closer to me. “Mom, not here.”

“You keep saying that now.”

His jaw tightened. “You’re angry. I understand. But this affects employees.”

“And did you understand that when you let me sit behind a flower wall at your wedding?”

Vanessa threw up her hands. “Oh my God, this is about a seat?”

I turned to her. “No. It’s about what the seat revealed.”

She stared at me.

“You thought I was someone you could humiliate because you believed I had no power in the room.”

Her cheeks reddened. “It was cake.”

“Then why did you tell the photographer to keep shooting?”

Silence.

Daniel looked at her. “You did what?”

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

Before the cake hit me, Vanessa had checked the photographer’s position. That had not been spontaneous.

Martin slid a printed page toward Daniel.

“What is this?” he asked.

“A copy of a message sent yesterday from Vanessa’s phone to the wedding content team.”

Vanessa went still.

Daniel picked up the page.

His face changed as he read.

At the bottom were six words:

MAKE SURE YOU GET HIS MOTHER’S REACTION.

May you like

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Vanessa,” he said, “what did you plan?”
